Ok, so maybe I didn't choose my words wisely, with the comment about competition between Glitz and Sludge.
Our little glam board is tiny compared to the Metal monster. But some of what appears there is relevant here, and vice versa. I think my view of 'rivalry' stems from attempts to drag posters elsewhere. There was constant references to Sludge board content. Also, no disrespect meant, but I remember how D's DeviantsReunited board was regularly raved about by some people. Much like the many other groups/boards which spring up and attempt to coax people away, from time to time. I think these fragment and weaken our little community.
I just know I don't wanna repeat myself across a whole host of boards. I have trouble keeping up with one or two!
My 6 cents.
The one constant has always been the attitude within' this board. It stays clean from the BS quite well, with most of the drama taking place in PM's and emails. When it does spill over onto the board, it dies a fast death. That is why I stay here. All of these other boards run by the whole "say whatever you want, and act however you want" rule. This place tries real hard to keep with respect for one another. That, IMO, is why Glitz has survived while the splinter-boards have all died.
When the Sludge Wars were going on hot and heavy, things spilled over onto other boards, mostly EZ, but this one as well. Certain posters would come here to start shit. As I've said before, it got to where any thread I posted on would be trashed by people whose sole purpose was to give me shit, nothing else. Certain posters here were used as tools by those people, both here and elsewhere, to start shit and/or be their mouthpieces.
Regarding Sludge itself, the main page is still okay, just not like it used to be.
The various EZBoards have all become quite insular, and that includes Sludge, probably burnout from the aforementioned wars.
Anybody else here have a cat? My cat hates it when you touch her butt. So, whenever my cat walks past, I have to pat her on the hip area, just to get her to turn and swat. It's quite funny to get a reaction out of something by just the slightest action.
Anybody else ever do anything such as that?
As for the old DR board, it, as with G2, could have more than thrived, if people hadn't been so eager to rush back here after GNet's several bouts of hiatus.
I think that if people had continued to post on those boards, it would have kept the flamers away eventually.
And why did the GNet downtime come about? A short spell at FoxKids, and a server closure.
I'm glad this place isn't an ezBoard, as people are less inclined to come here and bring shit from those other boards. It's all too easy with the nym-shifters, as you yourself know.
Maybe DR and G2 could've thrived, but I feel more comfortable here, where we were all together, rather than in little groups dotted here, there and everywhere.
Then again, everyone has their choice where they post. You sound like you reluctantly post here, Jay. No one's forcing you.

The censoring of G'net back then was needed, IMO. It was getting to the point where every single thread turned into a pissing match between a few people, and no matter what Spice said, they wouldn't stop. It was really her only course of action. Finally, the people who were paying for the board (which was NOBODY connected to Gzine) got sick of all their money going to watching these people fight like little mentally handicapped kids, and they pulled the plug. I all had to happen since nothing else was going to stop the stupidity.
Stace, for a looooooonnnnnngggggg time G'net operated fine. Some people just enjoy trying to create the drama, and thereby drag it with them wherever they go. Hell, one of those people created the drama with their very first few posts on the old board.

The EZBoard thing is a double edged sword. One one hand, as you say, it makes it easier for deliberate trouble to find its way, but on the other, it makes it easier to recruit new members.
As for me being "reluctant", I wouldn't call it that, more like once bitten, twice shy.
